Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a general term that includes several different types of treatment such as exposure therapy, rational-emotive therapy and dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT). CBT is a joint effort between the therapist and the client, which involves adjustments to the plan as treatment progresses.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a highly successful therapy for trauma that uses knowledge from neuroscience to help the brain reprocess traumatic memories. Most of the therapists at Spencer Psychology have received at least Level 1 and Level 2 specialized training. This training is through the EMDR International Association (EMDRIA).

Art Therapy

Art Therapy is a form of therapy of making art to improve physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Consequently, therapeutic art can help clients access unexpressed feelings and give clients ways to articulate issues without having to find words.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder. Consequently, ASD impacts the ability of a person to function in home, work, school, and community environments. ASD counseling can help address social deficits, including communication styles, and challenging behaviors.

Eating Disorders

Eating Disorders range in severity from mild to sometimes fatal illnesses. Regardless of the medical issues, eating disorders create misery, self-doubt, depression, anxiety, and obsessions. At Spencer Psychology, we understand the impact this can have, and have counseling treatment to help.

Play Therapy

Play therapy is a term that describes a number of different kinds of treatment methods. These treatments all use play activities to help young children communicate with the therapist and resolve issues. Accordingly, our play therapists use specific techniques designed to create the setting where children can act out their worries, fears, concerns and relationships through toys and other equipment.

Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP)

The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is a unique 5-hour auditory intervention service. It was developed by Dr. Stephen Porges, an internationally known trauma researcher and neuroscientist. Accordingly, the SSP is based on Porges’ Polyvagal Theory. It is a cutting-edge intervention, developed to reduce mental health symptoms associated with an over-stressed vagus nerve response.

Somatic Experiencing (SE)

Somatic Experiencing (SE) is a new treatment to heal from stress and trauma. Research suggests we hold memories of how our body felt during a trauma or stressful event. As a result, these physical or somatic sensations can add to traumatic responses. SE techniques are available through online counseling as well as in the office. Props found in the home with high sensory value can often be pulled into the online session to provide help in monitoring the body. Our therapists check in with the felt experience, and train clients in the “language of sensation” and in polyvagal theory.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) Group

Our Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) group uses a educational components to teach skills for dealing with intense emotions and also negotiating social relationships.  We have a Dialectical Behavior Therapy specialist who has done both group and individual DBT work for many years. She is trained in EMDR, and Somatic Experiencing, and also uses elements of trauma informed care into all her work.
